What is a Dog Shark? Shark Cartilage sale?
I recently discovered that my local health food shop was selling several glucosamine products containing ingredients derived from shark cartilage.
I of course wrote a complaint voicing my concerns. I explained about shark finning and depletion in shark numbers etc.
I received a reply saying the cartilage is obtained from Dog Sharks and that this species has nothing to do with the cruel practise of finning sharks alive as the animals are killed for meat anyway.
Now, in all my years at college and time reading about animals, i have never heard of a Dog Shark. What could they mean? The white spotted dog shark from australia? The white spotted Spurdog? The spiny Dogfish? I have no idea. If anyone could tell me anything i would be very thankful!
There are many species of dog sharks from the family Squalidae. They are in the shark family and are found in most of the worlds salt water environments. Dogfish are included. Shark cartilage is said to help arthritis and joint problems.
