I have heard drinking a glass of wine is good for your health?

What does it do for you and which is the best wine for good health?

Yes, there is truth to that. There are two "beneficial" effects in drinking wine. The first is the relaxation that is provided by the alcohol and the context. A small amount of alcohol drank among friends or family or as a night cap can be part of a "ritual" that can be calming and relaxing. If drank (in small amounts) before sleeping, it might help people who have difficulty falling asleep. In this sense, any alcoholic beverage works.

The second way it is said to help your health is by the presence of tannin. Tannin is an reddish astringent substance found in grapes (and other foods too) that is more common in Red Wine than in white. The argument is that it helps unclog your arteries and veins and therefore would be good for your health. I don't know how much this is true though. So, red wine with a dry flavor would be best as a should contain the most amounts of tannin.

Anyway, you should not look for wine as a source of medicine or part of a health program because the downside of overdoing it overweights any possible benefits. It is far better to hit the gym and have other relaxing rituals (or take some prescription medicine if you have a serious condition) and use wine for pleasure only and not to "cheat" by saying you are doing it for your health.
